In general, no. There have seen some improperly designed cell phone covers with magnets that have messed with a wake/sleep function of the phone or tablet, or with the internal compass, but a magnet will not permanently damage the phone. In fact, Motorola’s new Moto Z lineup of phones uses some VERY strong magnets to attach mods. I have a Moto Z Force, and the Incipio style shells offered through Verizon and promoted by Motorola are so strong you can attach your phone to any metal surface (stove, fridge, file cabinet) and it stays put.
A magnet strong enough to damage the phone would be ridiculously strong
